class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Established in 1929, Vatican City holds the distinction of being the smallest country in the world both in terms of area and population. The origins of Vatican City can be traced back to the early days of Christianity when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Peter\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Peter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Saint Peter<\/strong><\/a>, one of Jesus' twelve apostles, was crucified and buried on the <strong>Vatican Hill<\/strong>. The country traces its origins back to the year <strong>301<\/strong> when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Marinus\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Marinus\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Saint Marinus<\/strong><\/a>, a Christian stonemason, sought refuge on the mountain to escape religious persecution. Marinus and his followers established a small community that eventually grew into the independent state of San Marino. Despite numerous challenges throughout its history, San Marino has managed to maintain its independence for over 1,700 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\"
